Fourteen

I’VE NEVER BEEN lonely before. I know that, because I’ve never felt like this before.

Empty. Aching in places I’ve never ached from running or dryland. Raw. Like my emotions are barely covered by my skin.

When my sister calls and says “How are you little bro?” I stop, don’t say anything for several long seconds while I push down tears.

“Chris? Are you there? What’s going on?”

I take a deep breath. “I’m OK Becs. You want me to get Mom?”

“No. I don’t. I want you to tell me what’s going on.”

“Nothing. I just … how did you get over it when you broke up with Scott?”

“Scott!” There’s a lift of laughter in her voice. “I haven’t thought about him for a while. I don’t know — I guess I cried a bit and then I met Trevor and I totally forgot about Scott.”

“But he was your best friend … and then you never hung out again.”

“He wasn’t my best friend, Chris. He spent all his time shooting hoops with you. No offence — you were just a kid — but his maturity level was pretty much equal to yours. Anyway, why are we talking about Scott? Did that girl, Mike’s step–sister — the one Mom hates — dump you?”

“What? Mom hates Jenna … did she tell you that?” I shake my head “I mean, no. Nothing. Forget it.”

“Wait a minute …” Her words are slow. I can almost hear the lightbulb turning on in her brain. “Does this have something to do with Tilly? There’s been something weird going on with you two …”

“Mom’s here Becca; she just walked in. I know she wants to talk to you.”

Just before I pull the phone away from my ear, Becca’s voice travels down the line. “Whatever you do, do not screw things up with Tilly, Chris. You should marry that girl. I love her.”

And that’s it — it’s all I can do to hand the receiver safely to my mom before tears overwhelm me. Because, if Becca thinks she loves Tilly, she’s got no idea.
